Darrell Seawell, 69, from the town of Knightdale, in the US state of North Carolina, went to lottery headquarters not having a clue about how much he had won.

He then got emotional when lottery officials told him he had hit a USD 100,000 (GBP 81,401) jackpot on Tuesday, 7th November.

Darrel said in a statement obtained by Newsflash from North Carolina Education Lottery: “I’m 69 years old and If you’ve never seen an old man cry, I cried.”

He continued: “It’s a blessing.”

The lucky winner said the first thing he did when he found out about the win, was take out his phone and call his wife Evelyn.

She said: “He likes to joke around a lot so when he first told me I said, ‘Stop playing’,

“But then I heard him crying and I knew he wasn’t joking.”

Seawell reportedly bought the lucky ‘USD 5,000,000 Ultimate’ ticket at the local Mack’s Mart on Knightdale Boulevard.

He said he plans to save his winnings, and went home with USD 71,259 (GBP 57,997) after state and federal taxes.

North Carolina Education Lottery said: “The USD 5,000,000 Ultimate game debuted in March with five USD 5 million [GBP 4 million] top prizes and 15 USD 100,000 [GBP 81,401] prizes.

“Three USD 5 million [GBP 4 million] prizes and seven USD 100,000 [GBP 81,401] prizes remain to be claimed.”
