Girl, 10, Hailed A Hero For Saving Unconscious Grandfather Drowning In Swimming Pool

A 10-year-old girl has been hailed a hero for saving her unconscious grandfather who was drowning in a swimming pool after falling in.

Aurora Waanounou has been presented with a Citizen’s Valor Award after she did not hesitate to jump into the swimming pool to save her unresponsive grandfather.

Photos show Aurora posing with her award alongside her grandfather and a family member.

The incident took place in Glynn County, in the US state of Georgia, when the young girl jumped into the pool, located at Deer Run Villas, a secluded housing community after her grandad, who has not been named, fell into the water “and became unresponsive”, according to the police.

The grandad was “face down in the water” and unable to “get his head above water to breathe.”

Brave Aurora told her grandma, who was also present but who does not know how to swim, not to jump in and instead went in herself.

The cops said that she was then able to “muster up the strength and ability to push her grandfather to the edge of the pool” so that her gran could help.

The two of them then flipped over Aurora’s grandfather, allowing him to breathe, before the brave girl called the police.

The cops said that “Aurora’s instinct was to fight to save her grandfather’s life and ultimately, she did just that.”

Aurora was presented with the Citizen’s Valor Award by Interim Chief O’Neal Jackson, III, of the Glynn County Police Department on Monday, 5th June.

Newsflash obtained a statement from the Glynn County Police Department dated 6th June saying that she was given the award “for her acts of bravery during medical emergency involving her Grandfather, which contributed to saving his life.”

The award presented by Chief Jackson read: “Your act of bravery on 2nd June 2023 has been recognised for taking life-saving steps to save your grandfather from drowning and I would like to thank you for putting your safety at risk during this life-threatening situation.”

The police statement also said: “On June 2, 2023, at 1430 hours, Glynn County Police and Glynn County Fire and EMS were dispatched to Deer Run Villas in reference to a medical emergency.

“The caller, 10-year-old Aurora Waanounou told dispatchers her grandfather was unresponsive in a pool.

“Aurora was able to accurately give the address and pertinent information enabling an appropriate response.

“It was later discovered while talking to Aurora’s grandmother, not only did Aurora call 911, but she witnessed her grandfather fall into the pool and become unresponsive.

“Aurora‘s grandfather was face down in the water in an area where she couldn’t stand and unable to get his head above water to breathe.

“Aurora instructed her grandmother, who is unable to swim not to jump in to save her grandfather, and instead jumped in herself.

“Aurora was somehow able to muster up the strength and ability to push her grandfather to the edge of the pool where she and her grandmother were able to flip him over and keep his head above water.

“Aurora then jumped out of the pool and called 911.”

The statement praised the young girl for her act of heroism, saying: “Without Aurora’s heroic, fearless, and decisive actions under extremely stressful circumstances, it’s possible that the outcome would have been different.

“Aurora’s instinct was to fight to save her grandfather’s life and ultimately, she did just that. It was our honor to recognize Aurora for her acts of bravery, and we are pleased to report that her grandfather is out of the hospital and was doing well enough to attend the ceremony recognizing Aurora’s bravery.

“Please join us in celebrating Aurora for her bravery.” (sic)
