The tot has been named as Cayden Denny, and he was reportedly getting out of a vehicle with a trailer alongside his mother, Cassandra Lyn Becher, 31, and another unnamed adult when the incident took place on Dairy Road in the City of Melbourne, in the state of Florida, in the United States at around 8 pm on 3rd December.

Cayden reportedly ran to the back of the trailer and then into traffic, where he was hit by a 2009 Honda Pilot driven by Stephanos Maminakis, 56.

Becher was also reportedly hit and severely injured as she ran after Cayden to save him.

The Melbourne Police Department team went to the scene and found Cayden and his mother with several serious injuries.

Cayden was subsequently declared dead.

Cassandra’s mother, Michelle Becher, in a GoFundMe post she started to “help with expenses and funeral costs” arising from the accident, said: “Cassandra had broken bones and other injuries.”

The Melbourne Police added that Maminakis was free from alcohol and drugs at the time of the accident.

The police registered the accident as “traffic homicide” and are investigating the accident.

Cassandra said: “As most of you know, Johnny Denny and I tragically lost our son Cayden Sunday night. I can’t even express how I feel right now besides empty.

“I am physically hurt as the vehicle struck Cayden and me going 65 mph down Dairy Road in front of our home. All I really know is that I tried my best to save him.

“It all happened very fast. My body is recovering, but I’m not sure if my heart ever will. I am currently living my worst nightmare.”

She added: “I want to thank everyone for their support and kind words. Please keep my baby boy in your prayers. If any of you knew Cayden, you know how much light he brought to any room. We are devastated!”

At the time of writing, USD 19,090 (GBP 15,165) had been raised from 385 GoFundMe donations from two fundraisers for “funeral expenses and travel costs for some immediate family members that live outside the area.”
