The unidentified Lyft driver became concerned during a trip with Jeremiah Campbell, 29, and alerted emergency services after dropping Campbell and his son off at a local apartment complex in Chicago, in the US state of Illinois, on 25th August.

According to details provided in a police report obtained by Newsflash, Campbell was reportedly discussing the idea of drowning his unnamed son as a “sacrifice to Jehovah” and other conspiracy-related topics. Jehovah is recognised as one of the seven names of God in Judaism and a form of God’s name in Christianity.

Simultaneously, dispatchers received a call from someone at the same location, reporting that a two-year-old boy had drowned.

Chicago police officers promptly responded, knocking on the apartment door, but received no response. Peering through a window, they observed a man bending over a bathtub, engaging in suspicious actions.

Believing a potential drowning was taking place, officers forcibly entered the residence. Inside, they found Campbell taking the child out of the bathtub. The officers could hear the child coughing and observed him “coughing up water”.

The child was immediately rushed to a hospital. No updates on his condition have been released.

An anonymous witness, speaking to local media, shared their distress, saying: “They brought the child out, and he was just drenched and coughing.”

Campbell was indicted on charges of attempted murder, child endangerment, and violating a protective order. The protective order had prohibited him from being with the child.

He was subsequently transported to a hospital for a mental evaluation and is currently detained at Cook County Jail without bond.

A spokesperson from Lyft commended the swift and responsible actions of the driver, stating: “We applaud the quick thinking and courage of the Lyft driver who reported the suspicious rider behaviour to the authorities.

“This act of responsibility helped lead to the rescue of a child from immediate danger. The rider’s account has been permanently removed from the Lyft platform, and we stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”
