The 80-year-old green-fingered gambler, known only as ‘Happy Days’, had received a potted palm plant from her boyfriend just before the spectacular win.

She said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “My boyfriend sent me some palm for my birthday.”

After getting the plant the winner, from Washington, D.C., USA, began scratching off numbers from her USD 10 (GBP 8) Lucky Times 10 ticket.

She said: “I saw 38 and it was listed as USD 10,000 [GBP 8,023]. I thought something was wrong.”

Having thought that she found five matches with winning numbers each worth a USD 10,000 (GBP 8,023) prize, ‘Happy Day’s took the ticket to her daughter who was in the next room.

Her daughter confirmed she had won an amazing USD 50,000 (GBP 40,120).

Now she plans to share the prize with her family and said: “I have children and grandchildren who are waiting.”

Lottery officials say the retailer will receive a prize for selling the winning ticket.

They added: “Lucky Times 10 went on sale on Nov. 21, 2022. Two top prizes of USD 100,000 [GBP 80,224] are unclaimed.

“‘Happy Days’ becomes the 10th USD 50,000 [GBP 40,120] prize winner, leaving two second-tier prizes remaining along with others ranging from USD 10 [GBP 8] to USD 10,000 [GBP 8,023].”
