A dramatic pursuit involving two teenage suspects charged with Grand Theft took a heart-pounding turn when Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies executed a daring PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) manoeuvre.
The incident unfolded when HCSO deputies swiftly responded to reports of a stolen vehicle in Riverview, spotted later on I-75 near Tampa, Florida, on the evening of the 24th of September 2023.
As the young drivers refused to comply with law enforcement’s instructions, the situation escalated. In a high-stakes move, HCSO deputies, with vital support from the Florida Highway Patrol, executed a textbook PIT manoeuvre on the Selmon Expressway, bringing the stolen vehicle to a dramatic and safe stop.
Fifteen-year-old Terence Hipps, the alleged driver, now faces a series of charges, including Aggravated Battery on Law Enforcement with a Deadly Weapon, Grand Theft Motor Vehicle, and Fleeing to Elude at High Speed.
His fourteen-year-old accomplice, Ian Collins, has been charged with Grand Theft Motor Vehicle.
Sheriff Chad Chronister underscored the importance of securing personal belongings and commended the deputies’ swift and skilful response.
“Lock your car, no matter how briefly you’ll be away from it,” he emphasized, reflecting on the critical role played by the PIT manoeuvre in apprehending the suspects.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks posed by opportunistic crimes and the dedication of law enforcement to ensuring public safety.
