A newlywed in the USA has become a millionaire after she bought a Powerball ticket while celebrating Labour Day with her husband at the beach.
Lucky April Royal from the city of Fayetteville revealed she and her husband bought the USD 2 (GBP 1.6) ticket at the Circle K store in the city of Southport after a nice weekend at the beach.
But the couple reportedly completely forgot about the drawing until they headed back home on Monday (4th September) and realised they had hit USD 1 million (GBP 800,130).
Explaining that they had to pull over to double-check the numbers, April said: “We’re still in shock! And here I am driving in all of Labor Day traffic.”
She and her husband collected USD 712,500 (GBP 571,225) at lottery headquarters on Tuesday, 5th September.
April revealed they plan to use the money to make some investments and pay their bills, and use the rest to go on a honeymoon to celebrate their July wedding.
North Carolina Education Lottery officials said: “Royal’s USD 1 million [GBP 800,130] prize became one of two won nationally in the drawing.
“Her ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls to win USD 1 million [GBP 800,130]. The odds of that win are 1 in 11.6 million.
“Her good luck occurred as she and other North Carolinians try to win a Powerball jackpot that keeps growing.
“Wednesday’s jackpot now stands at USD 461 million [GBP 369 million] as an annuity, or USD 223.5 million [GBP 179 million] in cash.
“The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
“Powerball is one of six games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.”
