Leslie Williams was shocked after he checked his Cash 5 lottery ticket bought at a local 7-Eleven store and realised he had matched winning numbers 1, 20, 24, 26 and 25, on 18th June.

And just moments later the man from the city of Alexandria, Virginia State, USA, shrieked out for real to show his happiness when he found out that he had just pocketed a total of USD 1,063,690 (GBP 836,836).

Leslie recalled his first thought at the time, and said in a statement obtained by Newsflash that he was still simply not believing what he was seeing, saying he asked himself: “Could this really be possible?”

The lucky winner collected the grand prize at Virginia Lottery headquarters on Monday, 24th July.

Lottery officials said: “Cash 5 with EZ Match features a rolling jackpot, starting at a minimum of USD 100,000 [GBP 78,658].

“The odds of matching all five numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 749,398.

“In addition, a player who spends an extra dollar for EZ Match receives five randomly generated numbers with a prize of up to USD 500 [GBP 393] associated with each number.

“If those numbers match any of the numbers on the ticket for the drawing, the player wins that prize – even before the drawing is held.

“All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia.

“Mr Williams lives in Alexandria, which received nearly USD 4.2 million [GBP 3.3 million] in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.

“In Fiscal Year 2023, the Lottery raised more than USD 867 million [GBP 682 million] for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.”
